Although the centres are quite far apart, there are heritage centres right across the nation. They are of high quality and Scotland has one of the largest railway preservation groups in the country.
There are many local heritage groups that operate museums and railways from miniatures to full-scale. The Caledonian Railway near Brechin is worth a special visit, and the Strathspey Railway has recently been extended to connect with the main line railway at Aviemore.
The "Jewel in the Crown" of Scottish rail heritage is found in Bo'ness, between Edinburgh and Stirling. It provides the usual railway facilities, plus a fantastic museum. And they also organise many of the rail tours that take families and enthusiasts though the scenic splendour of Scotland.

The line between Aviemore and Forres was originally opened by the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway in 1865. A preservation group started up in 1972 and trains have been transporting tourists along the scenic route since 1978.
