Although not open to the public, the Stephenson works can still be found, tucked away behind the main station in Newcastle.
As far north as to be almost touching the border with Scotland, the Norham Station Museum perfectly complements the Heatherslaw Light Railway. The heritage cascades through the region, with the Weardale Railway taking us well on the way to Yorkshire.
Around the main centres of Newcastle and Sunderland, you will find a good range of heritage locations, including the Stephenson Railway Museum, Bowes Railway Centre and, of course, the amazing adventure that is the Beamish Open Air Museum.
And while the National Railway Museum in York provides a wonderful day out, take a trip to its offshoot at Shildon to find a spectacular collection of period and replica locomotives and rolling stock.
