Yorkshire is home to the nation's central collection of railway heritage. The National Railway Museum in York itself provides a wonderful day out. But for regular steam days, head out to Pickering and the North York Moors Railway, or the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.
The NRM is of course the main museum, not just in the area but also the country. But look too for the 'Head of Steam' museum in Darlington.
Active locations include the Wensleydale Railway, the theme park attraction 'Lightwater Express' and miniature railways at, for example, Newby Hall and Saltburn. Saltburn also offers an almost unique inclined tramway!
