Make straight for the Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough for an excellent family day out, but don't miss the other great centres - including those in Suffolk.

A handful of narrow gauge railways are open to the public, including two interesting centres at Wells-Nest-The-Sea, where you will find the Wells & Walsingham Light Railway plus the Wells Harbour Railway. There's also a good supply of miniature railways to occupy a fun afternoon out. Some such as those at Hitchin, Luton, Stevenage and Peterborough are within easy reach of London. Others are better if you're planning a short break slightly further away from the city.

The region's menu is rounded off with desserts in the shape of recommended museums such as the Forncett Industrial steam Museum on Norwich or the Railworld Museum in Peterborough.
